Herpes is a family of viruses. They can be divided into two broad categories called Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and Herpes Simplex Virus 2. In the main Herpes Simplex Virus 1 are responsible for causing Cold Sores around the lips. Herpes Simplex Virus 2 on the other hand is responsible for causing Genital Herpes the sexually transmitted infection (STI) manifestation of the virus. When one talks about “Herpes” it is Genital Herpes that is usually in question.

The symptoms of herpes as a STI are fiver and painful blisters in the area of infection – vagina, head of penis, mouth. These may last for up to three weeks after which they gradually subside. Repeated attacks during the lifetime of the patient are not uncommon. There is no cure for genital herpes.
