Treponema pallidum

Treponema pallidum is the name of the causative organism of syphilis. It has a characteristic pale colour (pallidum) and spiral shape. It belongs to a small group of bacteria called spirochaets. Nasty as it may be in appearance it is nonetheless very ameniable to treatment with antibiotics.


Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease or infection. It develops in three phases over a lifetime if not treated. In its final stage, when it affects the brain, it may be fatal. Caught in time syphilis is readily treated with antibiotics.


Sexually Transmitted Disease. This is now more properly referred to as STI or Sexually Transmitted Infection. This group of diseases is spread through sexual activity. The old term for these diseases was “venereal disease”. Syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes and HIV are all example of STD’s

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacteria called the gonococcus. While gonorrhoea is treatable with antibiotics there is now growing concern about the ever increasing numbers of antibiotic resistant strains of gonococcus that are starting to emerge.


Chlamydia is a common STD caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It is easily treated if discovered in time. In women untreated it can cause blockage of her Fallopian Tubes, infertility and ectopic pregnancy. In that sense it can be fatal. Therefore all sexually active women, other than those in a monogamous relationship should be tested annually for chlamydia.
