Duodenal ulcer is a small gap in the mucosal lining of the duodenum which is that part of your intestine immediately beyond the stomach. The gap is generally quite small and seldom reaching the size of a finger nail.. However because it does go through the full thickness of the mucosa, acidic stomach contents can reach the substructures of the lining and it is this that causes the pain.
